LIMA — After a quarter of a century of prosecutorial experience — the past 18 as Allen County’s prosecuting attorney — Juergen Waldick has his eyes on a bigger prize. He has formally announced his candidacy for an open seat on Ohio’s 3rd District Court of Appeals.

Waldick’s pending candidacy has been anything but a secret. He logged some 16,000 miles this summer visiting fairs and other events in each of the 17 counties that comprise the appellate district. His campaign became official at the Allen County Republican Party’s monthly luncheon last Friday, when Waldick announced he will file the necessary paperwork early next year as a candidate to succeed incumbent Judge Stephen Shaw, who is prohibited from seeking re-election because of age limitations.

Shaw’s pending retirement provided Waldick, 63, with the perfect opportunity to seek an open seat and to put his 36 years of trial experience and 33 years as an adjunct professor at Ohio Northern University to good use.

“With my background and experience, it just seemed like the time was right,” Waldick said.

For the first time ever, candidates for appellate court will be identified on the ballot in 2022 as either Republican, Democrat or independent. Seats have been non-partisan in past years. Waldick is the lone Republican to date to announce his candidacy.

If elected to a seat on the bench, the Allen County Republican Party Central Committee would be tasked with naming his successor as prosecuting attorney.

The job of an appellate court judge requires extensive reading and an in-depth knowledge of state and federal laws. Waldick said those skills are simply an extension of his current responsibilities.

“Most people don’t understand the amount of preparation time it takes before you ever step into a courtroom,” the longtime attorney said. “As prosecutors, we have to know the law.”

If elected, Waldick has no plans to be an activist from the bench.

“I look at the job of an appellate court judge as that of ensuring quality control,” he said. “Was the law followed? Was a person given a fair trial? Those things are what’s important.”

Waldick was elected as the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney in 2004 and is now serving his fifth term in that position. He graduated from the Ohio Northern University College of Law in 1985 and worked in the Lima City Prosecutor’s Office and the Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office prior to being appointed an assistant county prosecutor in Allen County in 1998.

He served as Delphos City Law Director from 1991 to 1996 and was engaged in the private practice of law from 1985 to 2005 and has been an adjunct professor of law at Ohio Northern University since 1988.

Waldick and his wife, Kathy, currently reside in Marion Township near Delphos. They are the parents of five children and have five grandchildren.

The Ohio third appellate district serves the counties of Allen, Auglaize, Crawford, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Logan, Marion, Mercer, Paulding, Putnam, Seneca, Shelby, Union, Van Wert and Wyandot.
