LIMA — Sierra found out in August that she has kidney cancer and faces surgery and chemo sometime in the new year.

Because of her medical condition, there is little to no income coming in and she is afraid that this year’s Christmas will be disappointing to her son Shawn.

“I’m not able to work anymore like I used to without being sick all of the time,” Sierra said.

At one point, while living in Michigan, she was on life support for six months and continues having problems remembering things.

“My son helps me with a lot and then I got diagnosed with this (cancer) so I’m going through a lot,” Sierra said.

Sierra is hoping that through the generosity of the community, Shawn will have a decent Christmas.

The Salvation Army has already given them coats.

Shawn needs clothes — large size in shirts, a 36 waist, 32 length in pants and size 10 1/2 shoes.

They also need furniture — a bed for Shawn, “His bed’s kind of old,” Sierra said.

They could also use a table, a living room set and a television.

Sierra says there’s little she can do to help.

“I just needed a little help for Christmas because I will never be able to buy him anything because I’m not able to work. I’m not a good reader, speller — nothing. I just want him to have a really good Christmas this year,” Sierra said.

Sierra says she appreciates what the Salvation Army does to help people like her this Christmas through the Adopt A Stocking program.

“They’re really good people. They’re really sweet, especially for me. They helped me fill out the paperwork. Other people anywhere else I’ve lived always put me down for my situation. They’re (The Salvation Army) really supportive,” Sierra said.

If you would like to help Sierra and Shawn have a better Christmas, contact The Salvation Army in Lima.
