LIMA — For Tommy McCoy, coming back and investing in the region where he grew into the driven family man he is today was a no-brainer.

The Lima Mall’s newest food option, Hannah’s Southern Bistro, opened to the delight of many hungry deal-hunting consumers on Friday. Hannah’s is a fusion of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida flavors, with their highly popular gator bites, served with Chef McCoy’s very own signature southern Swamp Sauce dip.

The energetic food artist spent most of his childhood in southern Texas before he relocated and graduated from Piqua City Schools. McCoy opened the first Hannah’s location in the Piqua mall as a nod to his Ohio roots. The city rewarded him with such strong support to consider opening another restaurant and when he pulled the trigger on the notion prime space next to the mall’s entrance was too good to pass up — despite the advice of friends and business partners.

“Even the smartest people I know, like my business partner from Florida wouldn’t touch this investment with me. They were like ‘no,” McCoy laughed. “The analytics for Piqua weren’t great, at all.”

All may be well that ends well, but why the dogged determination to go against the grain and data? A mix of McCoy spotting a programming error in the analysis business venture.

“I felt like this was a community that will embrace us because there’s not a lot of competition for what we do,” McCoy explained. “I looked around and found there were no southern bistros close. I found nothing that serves collard greens that make macaroni, no briskets or stuff like that. So, for me, it was a belief we can execute and give everyone something they will enjoy that’s different.”

The menu is certainly different and culinary comprised of all things Texas. That means plenty of brisket options; such as brisket frito pie, brisket nachos and a brisket dinner served with McCoy by signature macaroni and cheese and collard greens. He also commemorates his time in Florida by offering gator nuggets.

In a fatherly nod the restaurant is named after his daughter and that keeps him motivated to do positive through the business to properly represent her image.

“Hannah is my oldest daughter, so this project has always been closest to my heart. I wanted to expand to communities that we felt we could make a positive impact in. Somewhere we could embrace our customers like family,” McCoy stated. “My entire family couldn’t be more excited to have our second Hannah’s Southern Bistro location right here in the Lima Mall.”
