Crash knocks out phone service, closes Elida Road

LIMA — Elida Road, between Cole Street and Robb Avenue, was closed to through traffic Wednesday afternoon after a single-vehicle traffic accident knocked out electric and telephone services.

According to a spokesman from the American Township Fire Department the phone line — described as a main trunk line that affects 911 emergency calls in addition to regular service — fell across a semi tractor-trailer rig.

“They don’t want to cut the line,” the fire department spokesman said.

The semi was still in place, with the phone line resting on it, at around 2 p.m. as officials waited for phone company representatives to arrive on scene.

There were no injuries in the initial crash, the spokesman said.
