LIMA — There have been several new developments for Lima’s downtown recently, but the work that goes on behind the scenes to make things happen can sometimes go unnoticed.

Downtown Lima, Inc. Executive Director Shaunna Basinger spoke to the Lima Rotary Club on Monday about how things have been going for the downtown, the resources available to businesses and residents and what can be expected in Lima’s future.

Over the last year, the nonprofit helped bring people back to downtown Lima with initiatives such as First Friday events and the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, both of which Basinger said had seen success. There has also been a focus on downtown beautification.

“The effects that we get from planters in the downtown and color in the downtown and feeling like its a really nice, polished, comfortable place, it improves people’s mental health,” she said. “Whenever you work downtown or whenever you visit, it makes places feel safer, and it makes them seem safer.”

Downtown Lima, Inc. also provides financial support for area group members looking to improve their small businesses.

“We have three loans that are operational right now,” Basinger said. “We are always trying to share with our members, if you have a project you’re looking to do and you’re struggling a little bit on how to fund it, come to us because we can help you. We know what you guys are going through.”

Basinger also spoke about the future prospects of downtown Lima. The new developments of the amphitheater, Central Business District and Spring and Main project will all support continued growth in the area. Her group has been trying to help get the word out about being patient during construction.

“We always have to remember that these little speed bumps are only going to create a smoother transition into what we’re building towards,” she said about the construction. “So have patience with one another, and it’s going to be great. We’re going to be doing a lot to help educate and keep people up to date on that.”
