Canton woman says she found burglar sleeping in guest bedroom

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — A woman said she awoke to find a man taking a snooze in her guest bedroom after he broke in overnight, swam in her family’s outdoor pool and ate some leftover chicken.

Stacy Steadman lives in the Canton home with her husband, son and her husband’s brother. The Canton Repository reported that she noticed a light on in a guest bedroom on Monday morning and found the man lying on a bed.

Her husband told the newspaper he had seen the man walking without a shirt on the street when he was leaving for work before 4 a.m. that morning. Raymond Pearson said he waited until the man passed by before driving away.

“When I left here, my family was sound asleep. My family was safe,” said Pearson.

Steadman woke up Pearson’s brother, Bryant Pearson, who chased the man out of the house, but not before she said he took a pair of underwear that was her son’s.

She then noticed that the sliding door to the backyard was open and the man’s soaking pants were by the pool. Steadman also told the paper that the man had seemingly eaten chicken that was left over from their dinner.

“He even lit a candle in the bathroom! He just helped himself to everything in our house,” Steadman told the newspaper.

Police nearby arrested the man Monday. They said they suspected he was under the influence and took him to a hospital to be evaluated. He has been charged with burglary and issued a summons to appear in court.

Steadman and her husband said they feel shaken that a man was able to enter the house they have lived in since 2009 without them immediately realizing it.
