Tiny Van Wert County village rocked by slaying

SCOTT — A shooting near the tiny village of Scott, population 298 in Van Wert County, has left an unnamed juvenile dead and another juvenile charged in that person’s death.

According to a news release from Van Wert County Sheriff Thomas Riggenbach, their office received a 911 call just before 10 a.m. Tuesday about someone being shot at 1339 Scott Road in Union Township. When deputies arrived they located a gunshot victim at the scene who was pronounced dead.

The suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived but was apprehended in the village a short time later.

The suspect is charged with murder, an unclassified felony; attempted murder, a first-degree felony and felonious assault, a felony of the second degree.

The suspect appeared for an initial court appearance in Van Wert County Common Pleas Court, Juvenile Division and remains held.

No additional information was released about the suspect or victim.
