LIMA — An event that changed hundreds of lives last summer is coming back this year to Lima, and it’s expanding to two neighboring communities.

Lima Ignite 2021, the second annual community-wide service weekend through Community Relief, will be Thursday, June 10 through Saturday, June 12 in Lima. Other Community Relief outreaches are planned for Aug. 5-7 in Van Wert and Sept. 16-18 in Troy.

Community Relief, a ministry of Union Chapel Missionary Church on Ada Road near Lima, brings service and construction projects to people who might not otherwise be able to afford the repair.

“If you are skilled, we need your help… even if you’re not skilled,” said Matt Naylor, the director of Community Relief. “I tell people all the time: If you don’t know what a hammer looks like? Great. We need you. We just need people who are willing and able to go out and love and serve their community, in the name of Christ.”

Naylor said more than 100 volunteers came out in 2020 to complete 30 projects, helping replace roofs, drywall rooms, repair electrical wiring, fixing plumbing, painting or working on landscaping. There’s a role for anyone, regardless of skill levels, and materials needed for all the jobs will be provided for the volunteers. People can volunteer for one day or for all three days.

It’s a free event, with free T-shirts and meals for volunteers, with lodging available for out-of-town volunteers. People can sign up online via CommunityRelief.net.

Each day begins with announcements and devotions and ends with testimonies from the day and an evening worship service.

“Homes and homeowners are changed forever because of this event,” Naylor said.

People in need of having work done can also sign up for assistance on the site’s “contact us” page, although he said they’ve already put together an “extensive list” of projects for the three days in June in Lima.

“Our goal is really to empower the local churches to reach out into their communities with the love and hope of Christ, through home repair and service projects,” Naylor said.
