STATE CHANGES WAY IT COUNTS VIRUS DEATHS
The number of people whose deaths were attributed to COVID-19 changed drastically in the 24-hour period ending at 2 p.m. Tuesday, but the change of minus-43 in the region doesn’t mean there are 43 undead people in the region.
The Ohio Department of Health announced Tuesday it would stop reporting deaths from its Ohio Disease Reporting System in its daily coronavirus updates. Instead, it will switch to using information from the Electronic Death Registration System.
The new system claims to be more accurate, but it sacrifices speed. ODH acknowledged the data is typically sent twice per week and can lag from one to two months all the way up to six months. It also wouldn’t commit to how frequently death numbers would be updated going forward.
“The Ohio Department of Health is committed to sharing information as quickly as possible — but not at the price of accuracy,” Ohio Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said in a press release. “That is why, as we move forward, we will be reporting the ‘gold standard’ of data from EDRS. The mortality data will be more accurate.”
The new numbers provided by the state saw a 19-person drop in deaths in Allen and Auglaize counties and a drop by 11 in Putnam County. There was a gain of five in Van Wert County and one in Hardin County.
The newest death recorded in state numbers was from Feb. 23 in Muskingum County. The newest death recorded was Feb. 16 in Putnam County, Feb. 15 in Auglaize County and Feb. 12 in Allen County.
