BLUFFTON — A Bluffton sixth-grader died Sunday morning after being involved in a snowmobile accident on Alpine Drive, near its intersection with Lugabill Road.

At roughly 7:10 a.m. Sunday, the Allen County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a single-unit snowmobile accident outside the small town. Upon arrival, Ethan Leiber, 12, was transported by Bluffton EMS to Lima Memorial Health System, where he later died.

According to the sheriff’s office, he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Leiber enjoyed boating, tubing, jet-skiing, snowmobiling and golfing, according to his obituary. Private services and burial have been scheduled. There is a public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services-Bluffton.

As Leiber was a student at Bluffton Middle School, the Bluffton school district released a statement in response to his death: “Our hearts break due to the loss of Ethan Leiber. Our thoughts and prayers for Ethan, his family and friends.”

A grief crisis team will also be available at the middle school when students return Tuesday. The snowstorm led to cancellation of Monday’s classes at Bluffton and most other local schools.
