LIMA — Lima’s first baby born in 2021 was Ryleigh Jade Upshaw. She was born at 6:24 a.m. Saturday at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center.
Ryleigh’s parents are DeAndre Upshaw and Keyairra Jones.
It’s something the couple wasn’t expecting for a couple of more weeks.
“We were more expecting around the 17th of January, but her water broke so we went to a hospital just to get checked in,” said DeAndre Upshaw.
The couple received a special gift basket from Mercy Health-St. Rita’s OB department.
Over at Lima Memorial Health System, their first baby wasn’t born until four days into the new year.
Niomi Danye Ward was born Monday afternoon to Shaniqua Walker and Ronald Ward of Lima.
“I was trying to get her (born) on New Year’s (Day) but she didn’t come,” Walker said.
Little Niomi actually wasn’t due until Jan. 12, but when it was her time to arrive, she did it in style.
“I was in labor for five hours and then when it was my time to push, I pushed her out in less than a minute,” Walker said.
