LIMA — Nikki and her two children were homeless when she applied for help through the Salvation Army’s Adopt A Stocking Fund.

She’s now in a shelter, awaiting public housing and facing a situation none of us want to be in.

“It’s been difficult. Like I said, I have a home coming up soon here. It’s just emotional for me because it’s just kind of frustrating that we’re in this situation. We’re all in one room with each other,” Nikki said.

Nikki wouldn’t go into detail about why they had to flee their previous living arrangement.

“We were forced to leave our home, and I lost a lot — a lot of furniture and just had to go into rush mode of getting rid of everything,” Nikki said. “You know they (her two children) went to school and came home, and we ended up hiding at the shelter.”

As we get closer to Christmas, Nikki isn’t sure what kind of experience she can give her children.

“I want to make it a special Christmas for them. By us ending up here at the shelter, it was a moment where I never thought I would be, and I just want to make it really special for them, and myself,” Nikki said.

Nikki has an 18-year-old daughter who is living in another state with Nikki’s mother. Her two other children, 11-year-old Kellie and 7-year-old Jack, are with Nikki in the shelter and are in need of many things — clothing, especially.

“Kellie is in a size 12, and my son is a size 8/9,” Nikki said.

Nikki doesn’t have a job right now but hopes to begin working again, once their situation stabilizes.

“I put that on pause until I can get a home,” Nikki said.

The Salvation Army’s Adopt A Stocking Fund helps provide for families like Nikki’s this Christmas. A donation of money or items can go a long way to helping these families out in their time of need.

“It’s a wonderful program. I hear people talking about it, and I just think that that’s wonderful to help people —just to know that other people care for you,” Nikki said.
