LIMA — A Lima man has been indicted by an Allen County grand jury on 83 counts related to the rape and sexual abuse of three young girls over a span of nearly two years.

Matthew Smith, 33, of Lima, was indicted on 69 counts of rape, first-degree felonies, in addition to four counts of gross sexual imposition and 10 counts of sexual battery, felonies of the third degree, in connection with incidents that allegedly took place from March 2019 to September 2020.

The victims were ages 13, 10 and 8 at the time of the alleged sexual assaults, according to the indictments.

Court documents reveal the Lima Police Department was first made aware by officials from the Logan County Children’s Service of sexual abuse that allegedly was taking place at a residence in the 800 block of Greenlawn Avenue in Lima.

One of the girls told investigators Smith had been forcing himself on her sexually since 2017. Another alleged victim told police Smith also forced her to take off her clothes so he could take nude photos of her with his cell phone, court documents state.

The youngest victim said she had been assaulted by Smith for approximately a year, according to records.
