LIMA — A fire last week at American Legion Post 96 in Lima has temporarily closed the canteen, but voting in Tuesday’s general election will be held there as planned.
According to a spokesman for the Lima Fire Department, firefighters responded to the post at 711 S. Shore Drive on Wednesday evening. Investigators believe a fire started in a trash can in the bar area of the post. The fire was “kept at bay by the sprinkler system” until firefighters arrived, the spokesman said.
Damage was “pretty significant to the bar area, and there was smoke damage throughout the building,” he said.
A Legion spokesman on Monday when asked about the fire said “right now we have no comment.” He did confirm that voting will take place as scheduled.
