No official word on reported Mercer County home explosion

CHICKASAW — First responders in southern Mercer County reportedly responded to a home explosion near the village of Chickasaw on Sunday evening, although no official report or press release has been made available by the responding departments.

According to Facebook reports the explosion took place in the 3700 block of County Road 716A, south of the village of Montezuma. The Chickasaw, Coldwater, Montezuma and Burkettsville fire departments were on scene and a medical helicopter was dispatched, according to the Mercer County Outlook Facebook page.

A nearby resident responded to that post by stating, “Sweet Jesus I hope no one was injured in this. It sounded like a canon went off from miles away and we saw a mushroom like cloud. We sped here to see if we could help. Road is clogged up.”

Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey on Monday said the Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department was the lead agency, and all media reports and comment would need to come from that department.

The state fire marshal’s office was closed Monday due to the Columbus Day holiday.
