VAN WERT — Van Wert area residents had to deal with power outages on both Friday and Saturday.
According to Brett Schmied, spokesman for AEP Ohio, the first one happened on Friday, affected 3,600 customers and lasted 2 1/2 hours. The cause of that outage was a squirrel who got into the Ervin Road substation and shorted out a transformer.
The second outage, on Saturday, affected the same substation after a tree limb came in contact with a transmission line feeding the substation.
A total of 5,400 AEP customers were affected by that outage. Schmied said 4,200 of those customers were without power for a little more than four hours. He said 1,190 customers had power restored in about an hour and a half.
