COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Health reported 1,341 more coronavirus infections on Saturday, pushing the statewide tally to 129,785.
Saturday’s numbers topped the three-week average of 1,053 COVID-19 cases per day.
Officials have been urging Ohioans to take care and to practice safety precautions during the Labor Day weekend in hopes the state can avoid a post-holiday surge, as occurred during July.
The State Highway Patrol also reported that agents from the Ohio Investigative Unit cited five taverns overnight Friday after receiving complaints of “blatant violations” of safety orders aimed at reducing the spread of the coronavirus.
Four of the bars are in northeast Ohio and one, Buckeye Crazy Restaurant and Sports Bar, is in Columbus on the Northeast Side.
Agents said Buckeye Crazy was cited for selling alcohol after 10 p.m. in violation of state orders that require bars to stop sales at that hour. On-premises consumption is supposed to end by 11 p.m.
The other bars cited are Highland Tavern and Cedar Wings Lounge, both in Akron, and Stage Pass and Kate’s Bar and Grill, both in Willowick.
The cases will go before the Ohio Liquor Control Commission for potential penalties, which could include fines and the suspension or revocation of liquor permits, officials said.
“We all need to continue to work together by following the precautions put in place to make these establishments safe and compliant,” Eric Wolf, enforcement commander for the Ohio Investigative Unit, said in a news release. “We continue to follow up on complaints to ensure liquor-permitted establishments maintain compliance and enforcement action is taken when egregious violations are observed so everyone can enjoy a healthy experience.”
The health department reported eight more deaths on Saturday, below the three-week daily average of 21. A total of 4,256 people in Ohio have died from COVID-19, the state said.
Hospitalizations for Saturday were at 77, about equal to the three-week average of 76.
Admissions to intensive-care units stood at 10, slightly below the three-week average of 13 per day.
