Three injured as pickup/semi crash closes Lincoln Highway/224 intersection

PLEASANT TOWNSHIP — A Van Wert County crash closed the intersection at U.S. 224 and Lincoln Highway for about two hours and left three with serious injuries.

At approximately 10:44 a.m. Thursday, the Van Wert post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the intersection in Pleasant Township. Donald L. Martin Jr., 50 of Ohio City, was traveling westbound on Lincoln Highway in a 1996 Ford F-150 truck and failed to stop at a posted stop sign. Martin’s vehicle struck a 2013 Volvo semi-tractor trailer driven by Allen L. Shrimp, 35 of Huntington, Indiana, traveling northbound on U.S. 224.

Martin’s truck spun into the side of the semi and went off the right side of the roadway. Martin suffered critical injuries and was transported by Samaritan Helicopter to a Fort Wayne hospital. Passengers Austin D. Heberling, 20 of Fremont, and Frank “Scottie” Morgan, 31 of Minster, were transported by Lutheran Helicopter and St. Vincent’s Lifeflight helicopter for treatment of serious injuries.

Shrimp was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
