Two Mercer County residents seriously injured in crash

ROCKFORD — Two Mercer County residents suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle traffic accident Wednesday evening.

Troopers from the Wapakoneta post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded shortly after 7:30 p.m. to the intersection of state routes 118 and 707 south of Rockford. Investigators say a 2015 GMC Sierra driven by Jack L. Fickert, 80, of Celina, was northbound on state Route 118 and was attempting to turn left onto state Route 707 when it was struck by a semi driven by Gary M. Hayes, 67, of Buchanan, Michigan, that was southbound on state Route 118.

Fickert was transported to Coldwater Hospital and later flown to St. Rita’s Medical Center. A passenger, Chase Ellis, 26, of Celina, was flown to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Hayes was transported to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
