Man pulls out knife in Allen County Courthouse

LIMA — An incident at the Allen County Courthouse is under investigation by the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a news release at around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, a man entered the courthouse, walked through the metal detector without acknowledging the court security deputy or complying with orders to stop.

The man then walked behind the metal detector, approached the deputy and told him he wanted to be arrested for possessing an illegal weapon.

When he was asked what weapon, the man then began to reach into his pocket. The deputy grabbed the man and tried to stop him from taking the unknown item out of his pocket but was unsuccessful. The man then pulled away from the deputy and pulled a pocket knife from his pocket. The deputy then drew his gun and ordered the man to drop the knife. He complied and was ordered to the ground, then taken into custody.

He was taken to the Allen County Jail where it was apparent the man was developmentally delayed and was suffering from a mental health crisis.

The mother was also contacted and confirmed the man was developmentally delayed.

He was taken to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center and was placed under an emergency commitment.
