ELIDA —The Elida school board met in special session Tuesday with one item on the agenda —the rehiring of teacher Barbara Hawk, who had recently retired.

Hawk is a sixth-grade science teacher and was 7th and 8th-grade Quiz Bowl Advisor.

She earned $73,573 during the last school year. She earned an additional $2,750 for being the Quiz Bowl advisor.

Under her new contract, she will earn $56,088 per year.

“We agreed with the teacher’s union to a memorandum of understanding in which we offered a retirement incentive to employees with a one-year guarantee of retire-rehire in order to reduce payroll and benefits. Mrs. Hawk took advantage of that incentive,” said Joel Mengerink, Elida school superintendent.
