HAMILTON LAKE, Indiana — Eight hours went by before police were contacted about a teenage boy who went missing the night before while boating on Hamilton Lake in Northeast Indiana.

The news they feared came 13 hours later when the body of Mason Shuey, 18, of Ottawa was pulled from the lake.

Shuey was a passenger on a boat when he entered the water and disappeared around midnight, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He wasn’t reported missing until 8:14 a.m. Sunday and was found by divers at 9:23 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities aren’t saying why it took so long for the incident to be reported. Emergency personnel assisting in the search used SONAR, aircraft, divers and rescue dogs.

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the incident.
