LIMA — A 14-year-old boy is dead after an arson fire early Saturday morning in Lima, and a man has been arrested for starting the fire.
According to Greg Kirkendall with the Lima Fire Department and a news release from the Lima Police Department, the boy was found unresponsive in a second-floor bedroom of a duplex at 124-128 W. Circular St. after the fire was reported at 4:45 a.m. Saturday. He was taken to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. His name was not released.
Jervon Fernandez-Wesley, 18, was in custody by Saturday afternoon at the Allen County Sheriff’s Office for aggravated arson. He is accused of intentionally setting the fire.
When crews arrived, they found fire and heavy smoke coming from the duplex and a woman on the roof of the house. There were six people inside when the fire started, and firefighters were alerted to that.
The woman on the roof was rescued and taken to Mercy Health-St. by Lima police for treatment of smoke inhalation.
It’s believed the fire started in the vacant side of the duplex.
Damage is listed at $36,700 to the home and contents.
The Lima and Shawnee fire departments fought the fire. Lima police are assisting in the investigation, and anyone with information should call 419-227-4444.
