Spencerville swine farm seeks permit renewal


SPENCERVILLE — A swine and turkey farm in Spencerville is seeking approval from the Ohio Department of Agriculture to renew an operating permit for the farm’s manure storage.

Jeff and Alan Ricker Swine, located along Monticello-Spencerville Road in the Auglaize River Watershed, produces an estimated 2 million gallons of liquid swine manure and 1,200 tons of turkey manure each year, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

The farm, which is designed to hold up to 4,900 swine and 24,000 turkeys, produces another 25.7 tons of swine mortality compose and 14.7 tons of turkey mortality compose annually, according to ODA.

If approved, the operating permit would be valid for another five years.

ODA will accept public comments regarding the permit through 5 p.m. September 11. Written comments may be mailed to the Division of Livestock Environmental Permitting, A.B. Graham Building, 8995 E. Main St., Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068 or emailed to lepp@agri.ohio.gov.
