LIMA — Duke Mauk, of Lima, brought his 1937 Chevy Coupe, known as the “Purple Lady,” to the Happy Daz Cruise-In held on Wednesday nights on Cable Road.

Car enthusiasts can tell the story of when, where and why they purchased a car, and Mauk is no exception. Except his story is one from the heart with a special “feeling.” Mauk had been looking on Ebay one day for a car and saw this one, and it was purple. That got Mauk thinking about his mom, which upset him, as she is gone. His mom had a love for jewelry and purple.

“I talked to my wife and showed it to her and told her I don’t know what to do, but there is something about this car,” Mauk said.

He talked to his wife the next day, and she told him she had prayed about it and said she thought they would be making a trip to Pennsylvania, which is where the car was located.

The original owner of the car had pancreatic cancer, which is what Mauk’s mom had died from. He had left the car to the nurse that took care of him, until he died. That nurse had the car for three years.

“I was one of the first to look at it, and I took it.” Mauk said. “The first car show I took it to was a Happy Daz Cruise-In.”

Mauk’s car is an automatic transmission with air conditioning and power windows. The interior features a gray cloth seat with purple stripes, that match the purple paint.

He and his wife get enjoyment from their “Purple Lady.”

“We have a lot of fun with it,” Mauk said.

Which is exactly what his mother would have wanted for him with a car that reminds Mauk so much of her.
