Wapak man serious but stable following car-train crash

WAPAKONETA — A Wapakoneta man was in serious but stable condition at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center on Tuesday after his vehicle was struck by a train in Wapakoneta that morning.

Police have as yet been unable to interview Carmen Tedesco, 83, but witnesses say the man pulled out of a parking lot on Auglaize Street at approximately 9:30 a.m., passed through the crossing gates at the Harrison Street intersection with the CSX Railroad and was struck by the train. The impact carried Tedesco’s vehicle several hundred feet to the next intersection, according to a spokeswoman for the Wapakoneta Police Department.

The Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency was called to the scene because of a reported diesel fuel leak. Rail crossings in the downtown area were closed until noon Tuesday.
