Putnam deputy charged with assault, awaits trial

OTTAWA — A corrections officer with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is currently awaiting trial for a misdemeanor assault charge.

Brent Meyers, 38, of Ottawa, pleaded “not guilty” to the charge back in March 19, according to court records. Since that time, special prosecutor with the Ohio Attorney’s General Office, Margaret Tomaro, has been brought in to prosecute the case and Judge Chad Niece has requested to be recused.

Meyers is still currently working as a corrections officer.

Steve Irwin, a public information officer with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, confirmed that Meyers had been charged as the result of a work incident when he allegedly caused physical harm to an inmate at the Putnam County Jail back in Jan. 19.

The victim had been serving time for not paying child support.

According to court dockets, a trial date is yet to be set.
