LIMA — There’s a new barbershop on North Street: Beantown Barbers.
The barbershop, located at 513 W. North St., will formally open by appointment on Monday, June 22, specializing in men’s haircare and grooming, women’s haircuts and children’s haircuts.
Founder Jean Craig, a long-time licensed barber and cosmetologist who most recently worked with Northland Barbers, wanted to open her own barbershop where she could focus on children’s haircare and offer her clients more attention.
For the kids, Craig plans to record a demonstration video to prepare parents for the child’s first haircut, typically given when the child is 6-12 months old.
Craig does a lot of designs too, styling men and women with everything from straight razor shaves, modern mullets, flattops, mohawks, undercuts and more.
“A lot of fun hairstyles,” she said.
Craig learned to cut hair when she was about 9 years old, practicing on her father’s boxing team. She then attended Apollo Career Center for two years and finished her apprenticeship with Steven Michael’s Salon before heading to Columbus for barbering.
Craig spent nearly 19 years with Northland Barbers and cut hair at Suburban Barbers for years prior.
Still, it took nearly two years for Craig to make Beantown Barbers a reality. The barbershop features new black speckled flooring, red and cream walls and all-black seating. Each chair has its own shampoo bowl. And there are multiple waiting areas to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines.
Craig will be joined initially by Donnie Marshall, a fellow barber with 39 years of experience.
