SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Shawnee Township Police continue to investigate a fatal accident that occurred at 5:23 p.m. Friday.

The unnamed driver of a Chevy Tahoe drove into a pond in the 500 block of Buckeye Road. He is still missing and presumed drowned in the pond.

A passenger, Jeremy Clay, 34, of Lima, was able to swim to shore. He was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center by his family. The hospital has no information on Clay.

According to a news release, the driver was eastbound in the 500 block of Buckeye Road. Just after crossing the railroad tracks, the vehicle went off the north side of the road, went through a fence and into the pond.

The Allen County Dive Team responded but was unable to retrieve the driver due to the murkiness of the water.

The Shawnee Township Police stated they would not identify the driver until his body is recovered.
