Woman who attacked priest with hammer to remain in mental hospital

OTTAWA — Putnam County Common Pleas Court Judge Keith Schierloh on Monday ordered a Napoleon woman who attacked a retired priest with a hammer in 2016 to remain in a mental health facility as a Level 5 commitment.

Frances Wilhelm, who is now 69 years old, was ordered to the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital in Toledo in 2017 after being found not guilty by reason of insanity for her attack on then 84-year-old Rev. Herman Scherger, of Cloverdale.

The maximum time Wilhelm could be held is 11 years, the maximum sentence based on the charges that were lodged against her — attempted murder and felonious assault.
