OTTAWA — Fake checks that closely mirror those of businesses in at least two Putnam County communities are the target of an ongoing probe by law enforcement officials.
Officer Tammy Blunk of the Ottawa Police Department said Tuesday morning that unknown persons are making fraudulent checks “that are a pretty close match” to checks routinely issued by some business owners. The checks are then being cashed at area banks.
“I’ve had at least four or five” such cases in Ottawa “and I know it’s happened in one other Putnam County community as well,” Blunk said. She has alerted the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce about the scam, and the chamber in turn notified its members.
“My recommendation is that businesses reach out to their banks or financial institutions to see if there are any solutions to protect their accounts from this fraud,” Blunk said.
