One dead following head-on collision in Shawnee Township


SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a fatal traffic crash that took place Wednesday evening on state Route 501.

Nicole Schulte, 50, of Wapakoneta, was killed in the two-car collision.

According to a statement issued by the Shawnee Township Police Department,

Schulte was traveling southbound in the 4800 block of South Wapak Road (state Route 501) at approximately 8:22 p.m. Wednesday when her vehicle collided head-on with a northbound vehicle operated by Frank Steinke, 64, of Elida.

Schulte was killed during the crash while Steinke was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center by an American Township EMS, where he was treated and released. Schulte’s body was taken to Lucas County for an autopsy.

The investigation is continuing.
