Suspect in Van Wert Co. home invasion captured in Fremont

VAN WERT — A Lima man sought in connection with an armed attack on a Van Wert County resident last week was captured Monday evening in Fremont.

Stephen Spieldenner was taken into custody by the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office on the warrant from The Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office. He will be transported back to Van Wert County later this week, and a court date will be set.

Van Wert County Sheriff Thomas Riggenbach reported deputies were dispatched on the evening of Feb. 5 in reference to a male subject who forced his way into a residence in Washington Township. The intruder, armed with a firearm, attacked a resident in the home, the sheriff said. The resident was able to fight off the attacker, but not before the man fired the gun. The resident suffered minor injuries but did not suffer any gunshot wounds. The attacker fled the residence before deputies arrived.

At that time, a warrant was issued for Spieldenner, 50, of Lima, on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated burglary.
