There are many who do not know that Allen County has a genealogical society. It meets on the third Sunday of the month at the Allen County Museum auditorium, 620 W. Market Street, Lima, OH from 2:00-4:00 pm. It is free and open to the public. We have speakers or topics of interest to genealogists or those considering genealogy. This year we will be looking at the stories of different pioneers at our meetings as this year marks the 200th anniversary of the formation of Allen County by an act of the Ohio General Assembly. Although Allen County was not organized until 1831, the federal census of 1830 showed a population of 578 people and it had grown to a recorded population of 9,079 by 1840. These may include your ancestors.
The Allen County Genealogical Society would like to encourage all those with ancestors from Allen County to become members of our lineage societies. We have three lineage societies: First Families, Civil War Families, and Settlers and Builders.
First Families of Allen County is open to those with ancestors who were in Allen County by 1840. Civil War Families of Allen County is open to those with direct ancestors or collateral relatives who served in the Civil War that lived, died or were buried in Allen County or served in an Allen County unit between April 12, 1861 and April 18, 1865. Settlers and Builders of Allen County is for those who have ancestors who settled and built here between 1841 and 1880.
The deadline for all of the lineage societies is June 1, 2020. You need to begin as soon as possible if you are interested in joining this year. Applications are available at our monthly meetings and by contacting us at our email account, [email protected] You may contact us at this email if you have any questions.
