St. Rita’s physician now seeing Sickle Cell patients

LIMA — Mercy Health–St. Rita’s Medical Center Family Medicine Practice physician Dr. Robert Zukas is now seeing patients with Sickle Cell Disease, a rare chronic vascular disease afflicting some 100,000 Americans.

Dr. Zukas has undergone specialty training to care for Sickle Cell patients in Lima.

Sickle Cell Disease is a condition in which the patient’s red blood cells become sticky – often taking a “sickle” or C-shape – which get stuck or die early and cause a shortage of red blood cells and blood flow blockage, in turn causing pain and serious health issues. While the condition is rare, Mercy Health estimates 50 individuals in the Lima region are diagnosed with Sickle Cell.
