GILBOA — A 42-year-old Gilboa man died late Wednesday in a fire that destroyed his home and damaged a neighboring residence.
Putnam County Coroner Jennifer Maag on Thursday afternoon identified the victim as Jason Mansfield, of Gilboa.
According to a statement released early Thursday by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call was received shortly before midnight Wednesday in reference to the structure fire at 140 Franklin St., Gilboa, which Mansfield owned. Upon their arrival, firefighters found the home fully engulfed in fire.
One person, later identified as Mansfield, was found deceased inside the structure.
The home, valued at $38,600 according to the Putnam County Auditor’s website, was deemed a total loss.
According to Deputy Chris Verhoff of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the fire also spread to a neighboring residence at 138 Franklin St., causing damage to a garage and forcing a family of four to evacuate the premises.
Units at the scene included fire departments from Gilboa, Pandora, Ottawa and Leipsic, along with EMS squads from Putnam County, Leipsic and Pandora; the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Pandora Police Department, Putnam County Coroner’s Office and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The incident remains under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.
