Public Invited for Open Forum with Candidates for U.S. House (District 4)

Three Democratic candidates are vying for the chance to represent Allen County – and Ohio’s Fourth Congressional District — in Congress. In Ohio’s primary on March 17, Democratic voters will choose one of these candidates to run for the seat currently held by Jim Jordan in the U.S. House.

On Saturday, Feb 15, the public is invited to hear what these candidates have to say, in a dynamic debate. The debate is free and open to the public. It will be from 7-9 pm at the Bluffton Town Hall (3rd floor), 100 E Elm St./ 154 N. Main St. The third floor is ADA accessible.

The debate will include opening and closing statements as well as the chance for rebuttals.

The forum is co-sponsored by Allen and Hardin for Election Action and Democracy (AHEAD), the Lima African American Chamber of Commerce, and Millennial Action Pact. The event will be moderated by Bluffton resident Lisa Robeson.

“Voters have a real choice,” said JaMesha Williamson, of the Millennial Action Pact. “Through the debate, people can understand who best represents them – and who they want to vote for.”

The Democratic candidates for District 4 are Shannon Freshour, Mike Larsen, and Jeffrey A. Sites. A brief description of each is below.

· Shannon Freshour’s family story is like many in Ohio communities: they struggled financially, often living paycheck to paycheck, and were forced to move a lot. She is grateful for her mom’s focus on education and for Ohio’s public schools. Freshour says, “We need to give more opportunities to the next generation, allowing them the start they need to compete and win in our ever-changing economy.”

· Mike Larsen has run a business, been a rank and file member of four unions, and served as a senior adviser to progressive Democratic Congresswoman Jackie Speier. He has worked for many well-known Democrats including Harvey Milk, America’s first openly-gay elected official, and Congressman Tom Lantos, the first holocaust survivor to serve in Congress, and many more. Larsen says he knows how Congress works, and knows what happens when it doesn’t.

· Jeffrey A. Sites writes: “The question candidates are always asked, ‘why are you running?’ I give you this quote from Albert Einstein, ‘the world will not be destroyed by those who are evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.’ We have watched the stance the GOP has taken on issues such as the Affordable Care Act, Immigration Policies, the Equal Rights afforded under the Constitution, Climate Change and most importantly the assault on Women’s Rights to their our bodies.”
