PORTLAND, Ind. — Citing court documents, a central Indiana newspaper reported Thursday that former Fort Recovery High School softball coaches Esther Stephen, 31, and Shelby Hiestand, 18, admitted to investigators that they had “conspired together to murder Shea Briar on Jan. 11-12.”

The Muncie Star Press reported that documents filed Wednesday allege that Stephen and Hiestand, both of Portland, Indiana, conspired to kill Briar over a legal dispute concerning his and Stephen’s child. Stephen “was angry with (Briar) because he had recently initiated court proceedings to establish parenting time rights for their minor child and petitioned the court to change the child’s last name,” the document said.

The women reportedly lured him to the area of Jay County (Indiana) roads 125-W and 850-N, where Hiestand allegedly shot him in the back with a rifle, according to the Muncie newspaper.

The mortally wounded 31-year-old Portland man was found on the roadway shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. He was later pronounced dead at a Fort Wayne hospital.
