LIMA — Nominations for this year’s Jefferson Awards for Public Services are now being accepted.
Eight adults and four youths across Allen, Auglaize, Hancock, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties will be recognized in the national program celebrating outstanding achievements within their communities.
Nomination forms are available at the United Way office located at 616 S. Collett St. in Lima, and, new this year, forms are available online at unitedwaylima.org as well. Nominations will be accepted until Feb. 19.
There will be a recognition event on March 26 to honor the group of winners, and one winner will be selected to attend the national Jefferson Awards dinner in Washington D.C.
In addition, each winner will receive a monetary award for a non-profit of their choice. The adult winners will receive $350 each, sponsored by Alberta Lee, while youth winners will receive $250 each, sponsored by previous winners Ed and Sandra Monfort.
Last year’s award adult winners included Jenny and Joe Earl, Mike Melvin, Philip Compton, Kathy Gasser, Candace Newland, Cheryl Nagy, Sarah Feldner and Derry Glenn. Emily Vandemark, Rebecca Dominguez, Emily Dienstberger and Lauren Cunningham were awarded in the youth category. Cunningham, the youngest winner for the Lima region at 14 years old, went on to represent the area in Washington D.C.
The national program was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sen. Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard and was brought to the Lima region in 2001. Estella Adams was the first local winner. Sponsors include Your Hometown Lima Stations, The United Way of Greater Lima, The Lima News and Husky Lima Refinery.
