LIMA — Grassroots anti-Trump rallies were organized all over the country Tuesday, just ahead of Wednesday’s vote in the U.S. House to impeach President Donald Trump.

The mobilization was organized by MoveOn and locally by AHEAD — Allen & Hardin for Election Action & Democracy.

Around 40 people gathered at Lima’s Town Square Tuesday night to let their voices be heard.

“We’ve gathered here because our leadership is not upholding the standards of our democracy and it’s up to us as citizens, as members of the community, as Americans to come together and urge our legislators to defend the constitution to uphold their oath of office and to call for the impeachment of President Trump,” said Maya Fishoff, an AHEAD member.

Several speakers called for the impeachment of the Republican president.

Ken Poling, who is running against Matt Huffman for State Senator was asked why Trump should be impeached.

“I mean, between multiple sexual assault allegations, and horrible, horrible things, children being detained at the border and kept in cages, like, there’s too many things to list. Like, I hate that man,” said Poling.

Isaac Andreas, a 21-year-old from Bluffton, told the crowd that impeachment is “kind of scary.”

“There’s so many possibilities for it to backfire politically,” said Andreas. “Regardless of whether impeachment works or not, it should be done. Impeachment is necessary. Impeachment is not a strategic political plan, but an obligation to defend the constitution and democracy.”

Jeff Sites, a U.S. Army veteran, and Democrat, who is running to unseat incumbent Republican Jim Jordan for the 4th Congressional District, took aim at the congressman, a staunch supporter of Trump.

“I believe in the rule of law. Jim Jordan used to believe in the rule of law and he follows this president and he’s going to follow him to the end,” said Sites. “We’ve seen the movement, other Republicans away from the rule of law and Trump is leading the charge. This president went on national television and asked for foreign help against his opponent in an election. To me this is unacceptable. This has nothing to do with the Bidens. He chose to withhold aid from Ukraine. He chose, the Bidens didn’t. So he abused his power.”
