Landeck home is deemed total loss after Sunday afternoon fire

LANDECK — A home in western Allen County was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon, and the American Red Cross was called in to help find temporary lodging for the family.

Delphos firefighters were called shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday to 14708 Landeck Road, located within the unincorporated community of Landeck, in response to a house fire that was reported by a passing motorist who saw smoke coming from the dwelling.

A spokesman for the department reported that the homeowners, Tim and Kathryn Smith, and a young girl had escaped from the residence unharmed by the time firefighters arrived on scene. Firemen upon their arrival saw smoke and flames coming from the front eaves of the home and found an active fire in the attic. It was quickly extinguished, but the home was determined to be a total loss.

The origin of the blaze is as yet undetermined but was believed to be electrical in nature, the spokesman said.

Fire departments from Van Wert and Middle Point sent tankers to the scene, and the Spencerville Fire Department provided additional personnel.
