LIMA — The Fraternal Order of Police Lima Lodge 21 held its annual “Cops and Kids” event Saturday morning.

Law enforcement personnel from agencies throughout Allen County escorted 90 of Allen County’s less fortunate children, chosen by their schools, from the FOP lodge to the Meijer store on Elida Road. There, the children and the law enforcement officer they were paired with shopped for clothing, essentials and Christmas gifts for themselves and their families.

Following the shopping, the group returned to the lodge, where volunteers and the children wrapped the gifts while enjoying a pizza party.

The project has various fundraisers throughout the year and receives support from the Meijer Corp., individual donors, the local business and corporate community and others. The Lima-Allen County Regional Transit Authority provided three buses, and three drivers donated their time to help with transportation.

After this year’s event, 716 children will have benefited from this program since 2008.
