LIMA — Legal Aid of Western Ohio will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Lima with an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2 at The Met, 306 N. Main St., Lima. Brief remarks will start at 6 p.m.
Legal aid helps protect children, seniors, veterans and families. It offers free legal assistance to low-income people in noncriminal cases. It started in Allen County in the late 1960s with the Allen County Legal Services Association.
In the 1970s, it expanded into Auglaize, Hardin, Logan, Mercy, Putnam and Shelby Van Wert counties, becoming the Allen County Blackhoof Area Legal Services Association. In 2000, it merged with another group, and in 2004 Legal Aid of Western Ohio opened offices in Lima and Springfield along with Advocates for Basic Legal Equality in Dayton.
