OTTAWA — Ottawa resident Todd Rye will appear Saturday on the lottery television game show “Cash Explosion.”

Rye, 57, is the general support manager at Walmart, Ottawa. He is married to Shelly, who went to the taping of the game show with him. They have two children and one grandchild.

The game show will be televised at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Fox and CBS and later that night on ABC after the news at 11:30 p.m. He said he could not discuss his winnings until after the show airs.

“Out of 25,000 entrants every week I was happy to be one of seven people who were picked to be on the show,” Rye said.

He purchased a $2 scratch off Cash Explosion lottery ticket from Car-E-It in Ottawa in early September. He has played the Cash Explosion game in Ohio for nine years when he moved to Ottawa from Clarksville, Tennessee.

He was in Tennessee the night his numbers were drawn on TV and he received a phone call from his mother in law, Betty Jo Lauf, to let him know his name had been drawn to appear on the show.

“When you scratch it off it says entry three times then you can mail the ticket or go online to put numbers in. You are then put into a drawing to be on the show,” Rye said. He went to tape the show in Hilliard Nov. 7 at a studio.

“The contestants are taken out to the stage to rehearse and we met the host and hostess of the show,” Rye said. He said the other contestants were from Ohio and West Virginia.

Taping took approximately two hours before a studio audience.

“It’s really fun and like being on a game show where you have a chance to win money. You can win anywhere from $6,100 up to $50,000 and if a contestant gets a bonus they could possibly get an extra $10,000 to $50,000,” Rye said. The show takes out 28 percent in taxes on the earnings.

He said the game is a challenge because a person is required to be in the top two seats to go onto the bonus round.

There are eight contestants every week on the show and there is a computer screen from 1 to 20 where the contestants pick three numbers. Contestants can win anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 on any square. There are bonus rounds where people can win double the amount.

While he appeared on the show contestants were treated to a free hotel and gift basket with a polo T-shirt and food. The contestants receive a DVD of the show once it has been edited.
