Lima man dies in crash north of Wapak

WAPAKONETA — An 86-year-old Lima man has died after a two-vehicle crash just north of Wapakoneta on Thursday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Wapakoneta Post.

Police say Charles Mayer, 86, of Lima, was pronounced dead at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Memorial Hospital on Thursday following the accident, which took place around 12:15 p.m. Thursday along state Route 501 at Infirmary Road.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol investigation found that Mayer, who was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala westbound on Infirmary Road, failed to yield the right-of-way while turning onto state Route 501. Mayer’s vehicle collided with a 2013 Chrysler Town & Country minivan driven by Rusty Elsass, 60, of New Knoxville, who was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

The patrol says both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
