LIMA — Jury selection is scheduled to begin this morning in Allen County Common Pleas Court in the trial of a Lima man charged with the 2016 shooting death of Wapakoneta resident Ryan VanBuskirk.
After eluding police for nearly two years, Chaz Jackson, 24, was arrested last fall in Huntsville, Alabama, on charges related to the Nov. 21, 2016, shooting death of VanBuskirk at a residence in the 700 block of Catalpa Avenue in Lima.
The shooting was alleged in court documents to have involved a drug deal that had gone wrong.
Jackson was indicted in June 2017 by an Allen County grand jury on charges of murder, an unclassified felony; involuntary manslaughter, a felony of the first degree; and aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, in connection with the shooting death of VanBuskirk.
Two of the charges against Jackson include specifications that a firearm was used during the commission of the crime. Each specification would, upon conviction, add a mandatory three-year prison term to any other sentence Jackson might receive.
Rione Gray, 22, of Florissant, Missouri, was sentenced in November 2017 to six years in prison for his role in VanBuskirk’s death.
Gray also eluded authorities for several months before he was eventually captured in St. Louis, Missouri.
