LIMA — Though Knyko Watson, the 5-month-old lion cub, didn’t come away the winner of the Lima Mall’s Boo ‘n Brew Baby Costume Contest, it’s kicked off one of his mom’s best Halloweens yet.

“I just wanted to get him all dressed up. Halloween is one of my favorite seasons,” Aubrey Purdy said. Now that she has Watson, her first child, “I love it so much more now.”

Luckily, Watson was enjoying it as well.

“I think he’s just excited about how fluffy the suit is,” Purdy explained. “He loves it, he has a blanket that feels just like this that he loves.”

Thirteen competed in the contest for those age 2 and under, including a ’60s hippie, a dalmatian puppy with his mother Cruella de Vil, and Piglet with her mother, Winnie the Pooh, and father, Tigger.

However, it was Laiza Burgos, 15 months, of Lima who took away the top spot with her granny costume.

Mary Paton, of St. Rose Catholic School, an event co-sponsor, was one of the judges rating costume complexity, originality and crowd reaction.

“I think that her outfit was right on the mark and she was engaging with the crowd,” Paton said of Burgos. “The costume I saw on Pinterest, but she gave it her own little special something — a little sass.”

The event also included Halloween-themed games and crafts, a beer tent and live acoustic music from Geoff and Co. in the mall parking lot. Haunted Town Hall characters from Lafayette made a guest appearance as well as a firetruck and EMS truck for guests to see.

“This is the first event like this, where we’ve combined alcohol with anything,” Betsy Billingsley, marketing director at the Lima Mall, said. “So far, it’s going really well and we’re excited.”
