LIMA — A student was found carrying an unloaded handgun in a book bag Friday afternoon at Lima Senior High School.

School officials and school resource officers were notified and brought the student into the office, according to a news release from the school. The handgun was handed over to the resource officers without incident.

According to Lima Police Department Sgt. Matt Douglas, the student brought the handgun to school in a backpack with the intent to sell it. There was no ammunition found.

Douglas said the handgun was secured by the time officers were called to the scene. The male high school student was arrested and will be charged, Douglas said.

Lima schools declined comment, including how officials were notified of the gun’s presence and by whom.

The release states the district will pursue the student’s permanent expulsion. Douglas said the handgun was placed into evidence.
