Mercer County man, 70, jailed for fleeing scene after striking pedestrian

CELINA — A 70-year-old Mercer County man was arrested Monday for leaving the scene of a vehicle-pedestrian accident.

Police say James Farmer, 70, of Celina, was crossing South Main Street in Celina south of Logan Street at approximately 12:40 p.m. when he was struck by a 2003 Ford pickup truck driven by Harold E. Bashore, 70, of Hecht’s Landing in Montezuma.

Farmer was thrown forcibly to the pavement with a serious injury while Bashore fled the scene, police said. He was transported to a hospital in Coldwater.

Witnesses came forward with detailed descriptions of the vehicle, and video was recovered from the security system at a nearby business. The video clearly showed the crash, and a witness description of a unique design on the back of the truck helped in identification.

Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Luke Wolfe remembered the design and was able to help find the vehicle and driver, according to a statement from Celina police.

Bashore is being held on $50,000 bond on charges on hit-skip. The case is being reviewed by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office for possible additional charges.
