Hit-skip crash damages headstones in Shawnee area cemetery

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Police are seeking information surrounding a hit-skip traffic accident that damaged fencing and headstones at Gethsemani Cemetery on Spencerville Road between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday.

According to a press release issued by Michael Keith, chief of the Shawnee Township Police Department, the vehicle being sought was traveling eastbound on Chipman Avenue and made a left turn and began to travel northbound on Merlin Avenue at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then left the roadway and traveled through a fence at the cemetery, damaging four headstones.

That vehicle, believed to be a teal, mid-1980s to mid-1990s Ford SUV or Ranger with significant damage to the front passenger side, then left the scene.
